Civil War Reenactment as a Scout

Recently, I went to a Civil War reenactment in my “Calamity Jane” outfit = brown leather pants, fringed coat and leather hat with coyote tail. Shortly before the reenactment battle began, I was chatting with one of the guys at the biggest canon. I’d told him some of my renaissance fair, Navy and costuming background, and he called over the owner of the 3 cannon. My new friend Chester asked his boss if I could be involved, and they allowed me to be their “powder monkey” during the battle. My job was to bring each ‘round’ (1 pound of black powder in an aluminum canister) from the ammo caisson about 25 feet to the man who then loaded the cannon. Then I hurried back to the safety (?) of the ammo caisson. I don’t know the cannon’s size, but the barrel was thinker than my thigh! See pictures
So, not only did I get to really reenact in a battle, the boss said they wouldn’t mind me being part of the group.
A very good day!
